With nine singers, two pianists, two string players, and a combined audience of over 250 people, VOX 3’s season opener concert, folk/art, was a success! The group appeared in three venues in Chicago, Evanston, and Skokie between September 10 and 13. The first night featured a reception with food from Pita Inn, Fontana Grill, and Taqueria La Sierra, as well as sangria courtesy of In Fine Spirits. With paintbrushes and mixed media, guests at the reception created their own “folk art” on six canvases that appeared in the lobby on subsequent concert dates.
The program featured ensemble works like Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes but also rarities like Beethoven’s Scottish Songs, sprightly Canadian folk tunes by Bissell, and Griffes’ settings of Asian texts. The ensemble will next appear in a cabaret mixing music and medicine at Wrigleyville’s Nisei Lounge in late October.
